What are the differences between quartz and glass?

Quartz is a familiar and widely used substance, especially in industry. From the perspective of chemical substances, glass flakes are amorphous and quartz flakes are crystalline. The main components of ordinary glass sheet are sodium silicate, silicon dioxide and calcium silicate, while quartz sheet is a special glass made of silicon dioxide, which has higher hardness and transparency. The quartz glass has high temperature resistance, wear resistance and oxidation resistance, while ordinary glass sheet does not have these advantages.

The characteristics of glass sheet and quartz sheet are compared as follows:

1. The hardness of quartz glass is higher than that of ordinary glass. Quartz glass has the properties of ordinary glass completely. It has no other components except silicon dioxide, and its density is smaller than that of ordinary glass. It feels lighter than ordinary glass.

2. Quartz is resistant to high temperature and corrosion, and its melting point is also higher than ordinary glass. The temperature of quartz glass is 1100 ℃, and its melting point is about 1700 ℃.

3. The transmittance is high. The quartz glass has good transmittance in the whole spectrum band from ultraviolet to infrared. The visible light transmittance is more than 93%, especially in the ultraviolet spectrum region, and the upper limit of the transmittance is more than 80%.

4. Good electrical insulation. The resistance of quartz glass is 10000 times that of ordinary glass. It is a good electrical insulation material and has good electrical performance even at high temperature. In addition, quartz glass can also be made into high-purity materials.
